THE REASON THEY WERE MADE IN A LARGER SIZE IS SO THEY WOULD BE COMPATABLE
WITH WIDTHS OF SUSPENDER WEBBING MADE BY FAMILY HEIRLOOM WEAVERS.
THIS WIDTH OF WEBBING IS THE MOST COMMONLY USED BY RE-ENACTORS, LIVING HISTORIANS,
COTTAGE AND SUTLER INDUSTRIES THAT MANUFACTURE SUSPENDERS THEMSELVES.
THE BUTTON BARON owns three specimens in 1 inch size that are similar, one having a worn silvered top bar and one almost identical. The 1855 Patent date does appear on the reverse side at the top on all of our specimens'
THE HUTZELL & COMPANY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE PATENT DATE ON THE TOP REVERSE.
The attached graphic from the West Haven Buckle Company C1875 advertisement showing a number of buckles
with moveable prongs and the variety of Suspender Buckles they offer from plain to fancy. Most of their buckles were patented before 1860.
