Ferrotype buttons were very popular during the War years. Waterbury Button company held a patent for their production and by September of 1860 were producing a reported 10,000 parts per day.
Warren Tice writes of them in his "Uniform Buttons of the United States, 1776-1865": " At the beginning of the Civil War hostilities, ferrotype buttons bearing the images of sweethearts, mothers, children, soldiers, politicians and national heros appeared. Soldiers commonly wore buttons with photos of loved ones on their clothing to glimpse when homesick and lonely."
Our high quality "facsimile" ferrotype buttons are made from high quality brass or nickle plated brass rims and feature a black enameled back, just as the originals. They are made on our antique button machine here in our Gettysburg PA studio and all parts are produced in the USA. These are available in a variety of personalities in several sizes. Each button is attractively packaged. Note: Images are not actual ferrotypes, but high quality laminated photographs.
We can also offer custom buttons printed on Aluminum by photographer John Milliker Jr. Please inquire for pricing and availability.
