Description
"Whig Rose" pattern Cotton Throw / Blanket
Generous 52" x 80" Size
Made in Red Lion, PA by Family Heirloom Weavers.
The popular name of the Whig Rose coverlet pattern was developed in the 1830's using floral motifs that resembled those of the popular "Whig Rose" quilt pattern. Of which were made as support for the "Whig" political party.
Although, the pattern appears to be much older, likely an adaptation of an 18th century pattern.
The rose is thought to represent purity, patriotism and peace.
Early examples of these coverlets exist at the National Museum of American History and various collections around the country.
